This weekend, on Sunday 4th October 2009, beginning at around 2pm Portland, Oregon local time a funeral service followed by a family wake will be held in loving memory of our dear departed friend Sharma at:It will be my great honour to be simultaneously hosting an online wake event within the Second Life virtual world program at that same time for the benefit of those of us who wish to pay our personal respects to the family but are unable to attend the real world service.

This is your invitation to attend that online event.

To that end, Sharma’s mother Lynda, her brother Shawn and several oher family members will be installing a laptop computer at the reception which will be hooked up to a hifi system in order to both hear and communicate on microphones in near realtime with Sharma’s online friends in attendence at the Second life online location and at around the samet time (Portland is GMT-8 hours btw).

Lynda and Shawn are both Second Life community members known in world as Lynda Blindside and Shawn Jeriamas respectively.

I will be helping out on the general hosting and light DJ duties within Second life at a new 1/4 sim virtual land location venue which has been acquired and is currently being built upon for this occasion (see below for the slurl locator which will teleport your SL (second life) avatar to the in-world venue location known as ‘Sharma’s Wake’).

This invitation is open to any and all online friends of Sharma, whether you just want to meet up and chat with other friends, maybe make a small speech or announcement, maybe perform a piece of music or recite some poetry/rap or……… just hang out and have fun in SL for the day.

If you wish to attend Sharma’s Second life wake then here are the basic instructions on how to go about doing that:

1) Join the Second Life community by downloading the software (see link below) and install it on your computer. Its free to join.

2) Having created a new user name and avatar, make contact with SL member Al Blindside via the ‘Search’ (for members tab) facility and then send an IM (internal message) – to me to let me know you’re online. Note, you will be able to choose your own first name for your avatar and then choose from a menu of preset second names – provided the total name is unique and isn’t already taken by someone else. I will then add you to a group called ‘Friends Of Sharma’ which will make it easier to contact others whom you may already know from SoundClick, MusesK, RapBB and the other online sites where Sharma’s friends usually frequent. Check the gabage Can sticky thread at SoundClick for more info if you need it.
Tip: Practise moving around and getting the hang of the basic camera controls as well as the settings for your microphone and the balance levels for audio etc. It is best to use a headset microphone for speaking in world to minimise any runaway feedback which may occur from sound spillage if speaking whilst hooked up to external loud speakers near your PC.

If you wish to speak/chat there, then there is a local chat facility – and for those without a microphone you can type your words in local chat box.

If you wish to be heard singing or otherwise performing one of your songs on the concert stage area at the wake then you’ll need some further info on how to go about doing that…

Please note that it is customary for people to switch off their local microphone chatting during a musical performance in world or to switch to private IM voice calling. A special area will be set aside for continued chatting during performances which will not therefore disturb the music streaming.

Don’t miss a special tribute to Sharma at Mixposure.com live on the air starting at 7PM EST/USA 9/12/09  on Saturday Night Rocks

Sharma Kay Flohr

My intentions for this site is to “paint” a picture of who Sharma was and how and why she touched so many of our lives. Through the power of technology and with the help of friends and family we will all join together to share and learn more about this fascinating person. I will spend some amount of time gathering information in the form of images, words and music to pay tribute to our beloved friend. This will be an on going project where everyone is welcome to participate.

Stay tuned
